What Is the MOT in Cyprus?

The MOT in Cyprus is the compulsory vehicle inspection overseen by the Department of Road Transport. Its purpose is to verify that all cars on the road meet established safety and environmental standards. Although the term originally stands for “Ministry of Transport,” on the island it simply refers to the required technical check that vehicles must pass to remain legally operative.

Why the MOT Matters

An MOT certificate confirms that critical systems—such as brakes, steering, suspension, lighting and exhaust—are functioning correctly and within legal limits. This reduces the risk of mechanical failures that could lead to accidents. Equally important, the test measures exhaust emissions to protect air quality. Driving without a valid MOT not only risks heavy fines and possible impoundment but also invalidates your insurance coverage, exposing you to significant financial and legal consequences in the event of an accident.

Inspection Frequency

Private passenger cars undergo their first MOT once they reach four years of age, and thereafter every two years. Commercial vehicles—including taxis and goods carriers—must be inspected annually regardless of age. You may book your test up to one month before the current certificate expires without losing any remaining validity.

Preparing for Your MOT

Before your appointment, perform a basic daylight walk‑around of the vehicle. Check that all lights and indicators illuminate correctly, that mirrors and windows are free from large cracks, and that the body shows no severe rust affecting structural strength. Inspect tyres to ensure sufficient tread depth and even wear, and listen for any unusual sounds or spongy feel when applying the brakes during a brief, safe brake test.

The Day of Inspection

On the scheduled day, bring your car, its registration documents and your identity card to an approved DRTO centre. A certified inspector will start with an external examination, then raise the vehicle to assess the chassis, suspension mounts and steering joints. Emissions are measured with calibrated equipment, and electrical systems, seat belts and airbags are tested to confirm correct operation.

Passing, Failing and Retest

If your vehicle meets all requirements, you will receive a new MOT certificate valid for the designated period. Any detected faults—ranging from worn brake pads to excessive emissions—will be detailed in a failure report. You then have 30 days to correct these issues and return for a partial or full retest at the same centre, often without having to pay the full inspection fee again.

Consequences of Non‑Compliance

Operating a vehicle without a valid MOT certificate carries substantial risks. Law enforcement can impose fines up to €1,000, insurance companies will treat you as uninsured, and repeated non‑compliance may lead to your car being seized. Keeping your MOT up to date is therefore essential for legal compliance and road safety.

Vehicle Modifications and the MOT

Aftermarket alterations—such as suspension lifts, performance exhausts or tinted windows—must still conform to MOT standards. Modifications that impair handling, exceed noise or emission limits, or reduce visibility through glass are likely to trigger a test failure. Before undertaking significant changes, consult a specialist familiar with local regulations.

Ongoing Maintenance

Routine maintenance between MOTs is the best way to ensure your car remains safe and reliable. Follow the manufacturer’s service schedule, use quality parts and seek professional advice for complex repairs. By keeping your vehicle in good condition year‑round, you’ll minimise the chance of unexpected breakdowns, improve resale value and contribute to safer roads for everyone.
